The Clos Canarelli 2015 – a pure Carcajolhu raised in clay and foudre – is strikingly Tempranillo-like in its evocation of cigar ash, which joins concentrated, tart-edged, piquantly pit-inflected and brown spice-tinged, wild purple plum on a dense and grainy palate, leading to a sustained but rather rustically tannic finish. Might this acquire some refinement with time in bottle? I cannot pretend to say. But for now, at least, it is certainly more formidable than winsome.
