96/100 : Possibly rivaling the 1990 in a couple of years, the 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an amazingly built wine that features meaty dark fruit, spice, leather, wild herbs and earthy characteristics to both its aromas and flavors. While I’ve had a couple of bottles of this that appeared to be shut down, the last two have been anything but, and while youthful and slightly primary, have shown fantastic intensity on the nose, medium to full body, loads of concentration, and plenty of structure on the finish. I’m a huge fan and this was hopefully purchased by the case years ago while it was around $30. It should continue to evolve positively for another 5-8 and have a very long drink window.
