Darker, meatier, and with more substance is the 2009 Château Maucoil Châteauneuf-du-Pape Privilège. From the pebble (Galets Roules) soils and the Maucoil lieu-dit, located in the north west part of the AOC, this old vine blend (40% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre, and the remainder assorted red and white varieties) is aged 60% in 1-2-year-old barrels and the rest in concrete. Showing a thick, rich, yet elegant profile with fresh raspberry and darker styled fruits, licorice, spice, and solid minerality on the nose, this needs time in the glass to fully flesh out and was much better when I went back to it later in the day. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with brilliant richness through the middle, impressive balance, and loads of very fine tannin, this is a top-notch Châteauneuf-du-Pape that pairs solid ripeness with a classy, elegant feel.
