Domaine Mayard Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Nature, precision and heritage

Born of the passion of Arthur and Hugo Mayard, representatives of the sixth generation of winegrowers, Domaine Mayard embodies a new era in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Following the separation of Vignobles Mayard, two separate entities were created: Clos du Calvaire and Domaine Mayard. Since 2021, Arthur and Hugo have skilfully managed this 12-hectare family estate, 10 of which are in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, spread over emblematic locations such as La Crau Est, Le Pointu, Les Serres and Le Grand Coulet.

A committed viticulture, based on life

At Domaine Mayard, every gesture is designed to respect the soil, the plant and the climate. Organic farming, agroforestry, vitipastoralism and massal selections structure a holistic approach. Sowing plant cover, gentle pruning, rigorous disbudding: everything is done to preserve the old Grenache vines, some of which are over 120 years old, and to strengthen their link with the terroir.

This farming method is a response to the new challenges posed by climate change. The aim is to encourage soil microbial life, improve its capacity to store water and enhance the longevity of emblematic plots of land in the Southern Rhône.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape infusions and blends

Domaine Mayard produces a single red and a single white cuvée for each vintage. Domaine Mayard red, dominated by over 80% Grenache, is complemented by Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. Gently infused, without aggressive extraction, this wine is distinguished by its silky, powdery texture and aromas of blood orange, strawberry and peony. The 2021 vintage already embodies this finesse, while Domaine Mayard 2022 promises to be a great wine for laying down.

Domaine Mayard blanc, in conversion to organic viticulture, makes the most of heritage grape varieties such as Clairette, Roussanne and Bourboulenc. Its saline freshness and tension on the palate make it a rare wine, at once greedy, precise and structured, hailed by connoisseurs as an auteur white with a singular profile.

A cellar designed for precision

In 2022, the Mayard brothers rehabilitated a 17th-century cellar in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, designed to support their demand for parcel-based vinification. The winery is based on a triptych of materials: concrete, wood and stainless steel, enabling ageing to be adapted to each grape profile. Fermentations are carried out using indigenous yeasts, with no added sulfur, on grapes harvested at full maturity and partially destemmed. Long macerations – around 40 days – ensure

Aging continues first in wooden vats, then in concrete, with bottling after 18 months. This patient process reveals wines that are expressive, pure and deep, true to their vintage and terroir.

Côtes du Rhône, Lirac, and Southern Rhône expression

In addition to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the estate produces 2 hectares of Côtes du Rhône in the neighboring Valoris terroirs, as well as a confidential white Lirac. The Domaine Mayard Côtes du Rhône red 2021 and 2023, like the Domaine Mayard Lirac white, are distinguished by their aromatic frankness, their finesse of expression and a true identity of terroir. These wines reflect the same exacting standards as the estate’s great vintages.

Opinions and recognition

Opinions on Domaine Mayard are unanimous: precision, sincerity, depth and elegance define the DNA of this young estate. Enthusiasts and professionals alike emphasize the potential of the 2021, 2022 and 2023 vintages, the relevance of the approach, and the rarity of an estate that relies on the coherence of a single cuvée. The Domaine Mayard red, like the white, expresses all the attention to detail, from the vine to bottling.
