Clos des papes
Organic farming estate
The history of Clos des Papes is closely linked to that of the Avril family of winegrowers, who have lived there for many generations. Documents attest to the presence of vines on the estate in the 17th century. The original plot of Clos des Papes belonged to the Château de Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vineyard is temporarily planted with fruit trees, in particular cherry trees, while awaiting new grafts. Then, in 1896, Paul-Eugène Avril marketed his mourvèdre wine under the name Clos des Papes.
The winemaker registered the Clos des Papes trademark in 1902 and developed bottling in the 1910s. He was also involved in the creation of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Régis Avril was the first to introduce a “vin blanc de messe” (a white mass wine) to 10% of the Clos des Papes vineyard, in 1954. Paul Avril succeeded him in 1963, after training in Burgundy. His son Paul-Vincent also benefited from this Burgundian influence, convinced that fine, elegant wines should be made on the terroirs of the Clos des Papes.
