Domaine Charvin: Tradition and purity in Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Located in the northern part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, Domaine Charvin embodies an authentic, respectful approach to terroir. Since its foundation in 1851, this family estate, now run by Laurent Charvin, has perpetuated traditional winemaking methods, producing wines of remarkable finesse.

History and philosophy of the estate

Domaine Charvin was founded in 1851. For over a century, the grapes were sold to négociants. It wasn’t until 1990 that Laurent Charvin, representing the sixth generation, began to vinify and bottle the estate’s wines under their own label, marking a major turning point in the estate’s history.

The estate’s philosophy is based on respect for terroir and tradition. Laurent Charvin favors a minimalist approach, avoiding unnecessary intervention to let the wine express itself naturally.

Terroir and vineyards

The estate covers 8 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 13 hectares in Côtes du Rhône. The vines, with an average age of 50 years, are planted mainly on sandy and clay-limestone soils, with pebbles characteristic of the appellation. Parcels are located in the Cabrières, Maucoil and l’Arnesque districts.

The Mediterranean climate, with the influence of the Mistral, favors optimal ripening of the grapes, contributing to the consistent quality of the estate’s wines.

Vinification and Maturing

Domaine Charvin adopts a traditional vinification method: the grapes are fermented whole, without destemming, in concrete vats. The wine is also aged in concrete vats for around 21 months, without the use of new wood, to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir.

This approach produces elegant, well-balanced wines with great ageing potential.
