Domaine Gourt de Mautens: Characterful Wines by Jérôme Bressy
access wines available for saleNestled on the hillside of Crapon, west of Rasteau, Domaine Gourt de Mautens embodies the singular and uncompromising vision of Jérôme Bressy, a passionate winemaker and pioneer of biodynamic winegrowing in the Vaucluse. Founded in 1996, this discreet estate produces red and white wines of rare intensity from 13 hectares of vines cultivated organically since 1989 and biodynamically since 2008. Known for its extremely low yields (between 8 and 15 hl/ha), the estate has become a benchmark for lovers of pure and characterful wines.
History of Domaine Gourt de Mautens
The story begins in 1993, when Jérôme Bressy took over the family vineyards, which at the time supplied grapes to the Rasteau cooperative. Early on, he became convinced of the need to work in harmony with nature, furthering the commitment initiated by his father, who had already adopted organic farming, by introducing biodynamic practices. In 1998, he built his own winery and left the cooperative. In 2010, his radical decision to prune his Syrah vines in goblet style—prohibited by the AOC Rasteau regulations—led him to leave the appellation and label his wines under the IGP Vaucluse designation, notably Gourt de Mautens Rouge 2019 and Gourt de Mautens Blanc 2020.
An Exceptional Vineyard, an Ampelographic Conservatory
The parcels of Domaine Gourt de Mautens lie on clay-limestone marl soils, with a northwest-facing orientation that promotes freshness and balance. The old vines—some between 30 and 100 years old—are trained in goblet style, and Jérôme Bressy cultivates around twenty indigenous grape varieties: Grenache, Mourvèdre, Counoise, Vaccarèse, Picardan, as well as Bourboulenc, Clairette, and Picpoul. The estate operates as a true conservatory of Rhône Valley diversity.
