Introduction

The Domaine Clos Val Seille embodies the soul of the Provençal terroir, a place where family tradition, winegrowing history, and winemaking excellence have been intertwined for more than fifty years. Located in Courthézon, at the gateway to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the estate stands as a discreet yet essential reference for lovers of characterful wines. Thanks to its exceptional terroir composed of red clay, sand, rolled pebbles, and terraces bathed in Mediterranean light, Clos Val Seille produces authentic, precise, and elegant wines, including Cuvée Charles Bonvin, Cuvée Saint-Georges, Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Vieilles Vignes, and the Alliance cuvées sourced from the legendary Bois de Rayas sector.

A family history since 1971

The history of the estate began in 1971, when Charles Bonvin and his wife Jeanine decided to acquire this place steeped in history, nestled in a unique environment where the vineyard stands alongside the medieval heritage of Courthézon. They embarked on an ambitious winegrowing adventure, guided by a simple yet powerful vision: to express the truth of the terroir through sincere wines deeply rooted in Provence. In 1987, their son Jean-Marc took over alongside his wife Sabine. Together, they continued the family legacy and brought new momentum to the estate. Their rigour and passion led them to care for each parcel, each grape variety, and each vintage with artisanal precision. Today, the third generation, Pierre-Louis and Germain, carries this story forward, preserving the family values that make Clos Val Seille so distinctive.

A remarkable terroir between Pignan and the Bois de Rayas

The estate draws its strength from a mosaic of exceptional terroirs. The Pignan sector and the Bois de Rayas are among the most renowned areas of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, particularly favourable to the expression of Grenache. The soils, combining clay, sand, and rolled pebbles, allow for slow and balanced ripening, giving birth to deep, refined wines with remarkable structure. This geological diversity gives Clos Val Seille’s cuvées a unique personality, combining power, freshness, and elegance.

Authentic and respectful winemaking

The estate’s winemaking methods reflect a pursuit of precision and a deep respect for tradition. Whole clusters are used to highlight the purity of Grenache. Syrah, on the other hand, is vinified in open 400-liter barrels, following a gentle and controlled approach that prioritizes fruit expression. The ageing process, often carried out in new barrels or one-year barrels depending on the cuvée, aims to elevate the wine’s substance without ever masking the character of the terroir.

The estate’s flagship cuvées

The Cuvée Charles Bonvin stands out for its depth and aromatic intensity. A blend of Grenache and Syrah, it reveals aromas of black cherry, spices, and elegant woody notes. Its solid structure and assertive character give it an ageing potential of up to fifteen years. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Vieilles Vignes is defined by its refinement. Aged for six months in new barrels, it reveals buttery notes, citrus and candied fruit aromas, with a persistent finish marked by spices and dried fruits. Its richness and elegance make it an ideal companion for delicate dishes such as shellfish or fine fish. The Cuvée de l’Alliance – La Guigasse, from a terroir located in the heart of the Bois de Rayas, offers a masterful expression of Grenache. Its velvety tannins, aromatic intensity, and exceptional ageing potential make it one of the estate’s most sought-after cuvées. The Cuvée Saint-Georges, located in the immediate vicinity of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, offers accessible and indulgent wines. This blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Counoise gives birth to expressive, structured, and generous wines that charm with their balance and elegance.

An environment steeped in history

Beyond its wines, the estate benefits from a remarkable historical setting. Courthézon, a medieval town surrounded by 12th-century ramparts built by the Princes of Orange, offers a unique backdrop. The stones used for these fortifications come from the Saint-Georges quarries, which were exploited as early as Antiquity for the construction of the Ancient Theatre of Orange. This exceptional environment enhances the experience of visitors and reinforces the authentic character of the estate.

An estate dedicated to hospitality and discovery

Visiting Clos Val Seille means immersing yourself in a world where family memory, Provençal landscapes, and a passion for wine come together. Each cuvée tells a story, each bottle carries the imprint of decades of work and respect for the terroir. Thanks to the diversity of its cuvées, its deep roots in winegrowing tradition, and its know-how passed down through generations, Domaine Clos Val Seille stands as a key player in the viticulture of Courthézon and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. With its powerful, elegant, and characterful wines, it appeals to enthusiasts seeking authenticity, quality, and genuine emotion.
