A hands-on winemaker, a sincere signature
If you are looking for a Romain Le Bars wine, you are not simply seeking a bottle from the southern Rhône Valley. You are entering the world of a committed winemaker, trained hands-on, driven by a deep conviction: to let the grape speak above all else. Domaine Romain Le Bars embodies this new generation of artisan winemakers, for whom wine is first and foremost a living expression of terroir, vintage, and human touch.
Based in Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres, just a few minutes from Tavel and not far from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Romain Le Bars crafts sincere, generous, and precise wines, now highly sought after by lovers of natural wines and character-driven cuvées.
Before creating his own estate, Romain Le Bars trained for several years at Domaine de l’Anglore, an essential reference for natural wines in the southern Rhône. This formative experience allowed him to develop a refined mastery of low-intervention winemaking, and above all, a deep, intuitive understanding of living balances.
In 2018, he took over his first parcels in the Tavel AOP and vinified his very first vintage under modest conditions, while continuing to work as an agricultural employee. This decisive first step marked the birth of Domaine Romain Le Bars. The immediate success of the early cuvées allowed him to establish himself fully from 2019 onward and to gradually expand his vineyard.
Today, the estate covers around ten hectares, worked entirely by the Le Bars family, with total involvement both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
Domaine Romain Le Bars draws on a mosaic of terroirs located between Tavel and Lirac, made up of limestone, clay, and silty sandy soils. These soils give the wines a fresh framework, natural energy, and great drinkability, even in sunny vintages.
Romain Le Bars places paramount importance on soil life. Vineyard work follows the principles of organic farming, with constant effort to restore the land’s natural fertility and encourage healthy fermentations. Each parcel is observed and supported, never forced.
Progressive replanting and grape variety diversification also allow the estate to better adapt to current climatic conditions, while enhancing the wines’ aromatic complexity.
In the cellar, Romain Le Bars claims an artisanal and intuitive approach, but never an approximate one. Harvesting is done by hand, indigenous yeasts are systematically favored, and the estate vinifies only its own grapes.
Winemaking places strong emphasis on carbonic maceration—the estate’s signature—but also includes direct pressing and, more recently, traditional vinifications with destemming and cold maceration. Aging takes place in stainless steel tanks, barrels, or large oak vats, depending on the profile sought for each cuvée, over periods ranging from six to ten months.
Interventions are kept to the strict minimum, with sometimes a very slight addition of sulfur at blending. The goal remains the same: to preserve the wine’s energy, its digestibility, and its ability to deliver immediate emotion.
The range of Domaine Romain Le Bars consists of wines in the Tavel and Lirac appellations, as well as several Vin de France cuvées, which serve as true fields of expression for the winemaker.
Les Vestides, a red wine defined by freshness and fruit, highlights Cinsault and Grenache grown on Tavel limestone soils, offering delicate wild strawberry aromas and a supple, thirst-quenching palate.
La Roussanne, a single-varietal white wine, reveals a fuller, more textured side of the estate, with notes of exotic fruits, fermentation in large oak vats, and careful aging that brings depth and length.
Nouveau Nez embodies the most indulgent and immediate side of the range, with a red wine shaped by carbonic maceration, bursting with crunchy red fruit aromas and formidable drinkability.
The pét-nats, in both white and rosé, round out the range with vibrant cuvées aged on lees and disgorged by hand, captivating with their aromatic precision and freshness.
The wines of Domaine Romain Le Bars stand out for their natural balance, aromatic clarity, and great transparency. The reds favor fruit, fine tannins, and tension, without ever falling into the caricature often associated with so-called “natural” wines. The whites offer fine texture, always supported by precise acidity.
These are wines meant for sharing, but also true table wines, capable of pairing just as well with simple cuisine as with more elaborate dishes. Their energy and sincerity make them ideal companions for lovers of living, precise, and approachable wines.
Choosing a Romain Le Bars wine means supporting a small, family-run estate committed to respectful viticulture and demanding winemaking. It also means discovering rare cuvées, produced in small quantities, that tell a story of hard work, patience, and conviction.
For lovers of natural wines from the southern Rhône, for enthusiasts of Tavel and Lirac, or for those looking to step off the beaten path while retaining true clarity of taste, Domaine Romain Le Bars stands out as a safe and compelling choice.
