Wine characteristics :
Why choose this wine:
The 2001 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, and 5% Cinsault, primarily from very old vines. Mostly destemmed (depending on the vintage), the wine is aged for 18 months in old foudres. Showing a downright masculine bouquet of meaty dark fruits, iron, dried blood, pepper, and garrigue, the wine is medium to full bodied on the palate with fantastic precision, a pure, focused texture, loads of tannin, and huge finish. There’s lots of upside here and this should be very long lived. Give bottles another 3-5 years in the cellar, and then drink over the following decade.
