Domaine Mayard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape: the estate that has the entire Rhône Valley talking

⚠ Currently out of stock

The Domaine Mayard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the most striking revelations of the appellation in recent years. Founded in 2021 by Arthur and Hugo Mayard — the sixth generation of a winemaking family deeply rooted in the region — this estate, born from the division of Vignobles Mayard, has quickly established itself as a benchmark for all lovers of fine, precise wines that are deeply expressive of their terroir.

In just a few vintages, the Mayard signature has made its mark far beyond the borders of the appellation. At Best Vintage, we had the privilege of offering it to our clients. Today, we are out of stock — and that is no coincidence.

🍇 A young estate with a century-old history

The Domaine Mayard is technically a new estate — yet it carries within it six generations of winemaking expertise. Arthur and Hugo Mayard have inherited around twelve hectares of exceptional vineyards, including 10 hectares in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, spread across four parcels: Le Grand Coulet, Les Serres, La Crau Est and Le Pointu, located in the communes of Sorgues, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Courthézon.

From their very first harvest, the two brothers clearly established their philosophy: a living agriculture focused on the soil and the vine. No chemicals, no shortcuts. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, cellar interventions are kept to a strict minimum, and each parcel is vinified separately to reveal its own identity.

“We are not trying to make the most powerful wine of the appellation. We are striving to make the most accurate one — the wine that expresses something true about this terroir.”

🌿 The Mayard style: finesse, precision, emotion

In a landscape where Châteauneuf-du-Pape is often synonymous with power, alcohol and oak, Domaine Mayard deliberately takes the opposite approach. The style is elegant, airy, with a level of aromatic precision rarely seen in the appellation.

The flagship blend — 80% Grenache, 10% Cinsault, 10% Mourvèdre — is fermented with indigenous yeasts, without added sulfur, using hand-harvested grapes that are partially destemmed. A long maceration (around 40 days) is followed by aging in wooden foudres and then in concrete tanks, for a total of 18 months before bottling.

The result? A wine that breathes, that vibrates. Aromas of fresh cherry, flowers, gentle spices and garrigue. A textured palate, silky tannins, and a long, crystalline finish. For lovers of delicate and aromatic wines within the appellation, this is an essential address.

🍾 The cuvées to know

Cuvée Appellation Main grape varieties Style
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache 80%, Cinsault, Mourvèdre Elegant, fruity, precise
Côtes-du-Rhône Côtes-du-Rhône Grenache, Syrah Accessible, gourmet

📅 Vintages to know

Vintage Character Critical rating Appreciation
2021 Fresh, floral, mineral tension Highly rated ★★★★☆
2022 Complexe, gourmand, velvety 95 pts Wine Advocate ★★★★★
2023 Fruity, deep, great elegance Highly anticipated ★★★★★

The 2022 was hailed by Yohan Castaing (Wine Advocate) as “a real success” with 95 points – a recognition that confirms the estate‘s rapid ascent.

🗣 The word of the cellarman

The first time I opened a bottle of Mayard, it was a 2021, at the end of the day, almost by chance. I was expecting a classic Châteauneuf – powerful, fleshy, solar. What I got in the glass stopped me dead in my tracks.

Disconcertingly light. Aromas of burlat cherry, white pepper, a touch of lavender. And that length… that way the wine stretches out without ever weighing itself down. I immediately thought of those rare estates in the appellation that favor finesse over demonstration.

Since then, whenever a customer asks me for a different Châteauneuf – a wine that surprises, that doesn’t resemble the others – it’s Mayard that I mention first. And they always come back.

📭 Why Domaine Mayard is out of stock

📭

No surprise to those who follow the domaine closely. Here’s why Mayard bottles are disappearing so fast:

  • ✦ A confidential production – less than 12 hectares in appellation
  • ✦ S trong growth in international demand since the first reviews
  • ✦ Vintages rated 95 points by the world’s specialist press
  • ✦ A distribution network voluntarily restricted by the domain
  • ✦ Loyal fans who reserve as soon as the market is released

Scarcity is not a marketing argument here – it’s a structural reality. The estate is not looking to produce more. It seeks to produce better.

❓ Frequently asked questions about Domaine Mayard

The 2022 vintage is currently the most acclaimed by international critics, with 95 points awarded by Wine Advocate. The 2023 is also eagerly awaited for its aromatic depth.

Which grape varieties are used in Châteauneuf-du-Pape Mayard?

The blend is dominated by Grenache (80%), completed by Cinsault (10%) and Mourvèdre (10%). A classic appellation blend, crafted with the precision and lightness that set it apart.

Where are the Domaine Mayard vineyards located?

The 10 hectares in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation are spread over four islets: Le Grand Coulet (Sorgues), Les Serres, La Crau Est (Châteauneuf-du-Pape) and Le Pointu (Courthézon).

Production is limited to a dozen hectares, with distribution deliberately restricted. Rapid recognition by the international press has created a demand that far exceeds available supply. Visit our dedicated page to be alerted when we are back in stock →

Vinarium Xavier Vignon: a unique innovation in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Intra & Extra wines

Vinarium Xavier Vignon : une innovation unique à Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The Xavier Vignon Vinarium now stands as one of the most remarkable innovations in the world of wine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In an appellation deeply rooted in tradition, this innovative winemaking method challenges the established codes and offers a new perspective on wine aging.

With the Vinarium®, Xavier Vignon introduces a unique approach based on immersing barrels in a vat filled with wine, creating a completely unprecedented environment. This process now attracts Rhône wine lovers seeking new discoveries and experiences.

Xavier Vignon : un expert de Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Xavier Vignon is a renowned oenologist, a specialist of Rhône Valley wines, particularly Châteauneuf-du-Pape. For over 20 years, he has worked with the finest terroirs of the appellation, selecting parcels located on galets roulés, sandy, clay, and limestone soils.

His distinctive approach lies in not being a traditional estate. He blends grapes sourced from different partner growers, allowing him to achieve a rare level of precision in his cuvées.

With the Xavier Vignon Vinarium, he takes a new step forward by introducing a unique, world-first winemaking method.

The Vinarium: a revolutionary winemaking method

The Vinarium® is based on a simple yet completely unprecedented principle in the world of wine. Barrels containing wine are immersed in a vat filled with wine.

This system gives rise to two types of wines:
the INTRA wine, contained within the submerged barrels
the EXTRA wine, present in the vat

In this Vinarium, the environment is completely sealed:
no oxygen
100% humidity
natural pressure

This immersion-based winemaking recalls experiments with wines aged underwater, but here it is perfectly controlled. The result is precise and reproducible, making it a true innovation in winemaking in the Rhône Valley.

Intra and Extra wines: understanding the concept

The Intra & Extra concept lies at the heart of the Xavier Vignon Vinarium.

The Intra wine is aged in submerged barrels without oxygen, allowing it to develop exceptional depth and complexity. It typically represents high-end cuvées, particularly in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Extra wine, on the other hand, surrounds the barrels. It benefits from the Vinarium environment and natural interactions with the Intra. More accessible, it offers immediate enjoyment while maintaining a true aromatic signature.

This Intra & Extra duality offers two complementary expressions of the same innovation.

What are the effects of the Vinarium on wines?

The Xavier Vignon Vinarium brings unique characteristics to wines:

exceptional aromatic purity
no oxidation
a more precise and velvety texture
enhanced natural preservation thanks to CO2
great aging potential

Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines produced using the Vinarium gain in precision while preserving their natural power.

Why the Vinarium appeals to Rhône wine lovers

The success of the Xavier Vignon Vinarium is based on several key factors.

First, it represents a true innovation in a traditionally conservative world. It also offers a unique wine experience, with a concept that is easy to understand and highly distinctive.

Finally, the Intra and Extra wines offer a new perspective on Châteauneuf-du-Pape, bridging tradition and modernity.

Where to discover Xavier Vignon Vinarium wines?

If you would like to discover Xavier Vignon Vinarium wines, Best Vintage offers a complete selection of Intra and Extra cuvées.

Located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, our tasting cellar operates like a wine house with estate prices, allowing you to explore the finest signatures of the appellation.

Conclusion: a new era for winemaking

The Xavier Vignon Vinarium embodies a new generation of wines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Both innovative, precise, and deeply rooted in the terroir, this process opens new perspectives for winemaking in the Rhône Valley.

The Intra and Extra cuvées are not just wines, but a true experience in their own right, appealing to both enthusiasts and professionals.

When Should You Open a Bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape?

When Should You Open a Bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape?

Among the most frequently asked questions by wine lovers is: when is the right time to open a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape? Should you wait ten years? Can it be enjoyed young? Is it a mistake to open a recent vintage? Here’s everything you need to know to enjoy your Châteauneuf-du-Pape at its best.

Understanding the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Style

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a quintessential age-worthy wine. Whether red or white, it is often made from old vines, grown on powerful terroirs, and crafted with precise winemaking that gives it structure, aromatic complexity, and impressive aging potential.

  • Reds: Predominantly Grenache-based, they can be rich and bold or more refined, depending on the producer.
  • Whites: Often made from Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, or Grenache Blanc, they show great freshness and age-worthiness.

The Right Time: The 5-Year Rule

Châteauneuf-du-Pape can be enjoyed young (within 2 to 3 years) for its vibrant fruit and energy. However, the optimal drinking window generally begins 5 years after the vintage.

For example, a Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 will begin to express its full potential around 2025.

At this stage, fruit aromas evolve into more complex notes: leather, underbrush, spices, truffle, tapenade… The texture becomes silkier and the tannins more refined.

Drinking Windows by Vintage

Vintage Recommended Drinking Window Notes
2022 2027 – 2040 Young, sunny, concentrated
2021 2026 – 2038 Fresher, elegant, classic
2020 2025 – 2040 Harmonious, great potential
2019 2024 – 2035 Already expressive, present tannins
2016 2023 – 2045 Exceptional vintage
2010 2020 – 2040+ Long-lived
2005 2015 – 2030 Currently at its peak

Drink Now or Age? Key Guidelines

Ready to Drink

  • 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018: Depending on the producer, these vintages are already showing great balance and complexity.

Needs More Time

  • 2020, 2021, 2022: Too young for top producers. Cellaring for 3 to 5 years will greatly enhance texture and aromatics.

Long-Term Aging

  • 2010, 2005, 2001, 1998: Ready now or excellent for those who enjoy tertiary aromas if well-stored.

Special Cases: Whites and Prestige Cuvées

Serving Tips

  • Decant young vintages (under 7 years) for at least 1 hour
  • Serve reds at 16–18°C and whites at 12–14°C
  • Use large glasses to aerate the wine
  • Taste one bottle every 2 years to follow its evolution

In Conclusion

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a wine that rewards patience. While young vintages can be enjoyable, most great cuvées benefit from being opened 5 years or more after harvest. Under good storage conditions, the finest bottles can age gracefully for 15, 20, or even 30 years.
