The 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Domaine de Pignan perfectly captures the estate’s traditional and elegant style. Produced from 60 to 80-year-old vines rooted in a mosaic of rolled pebbles, red sandstone, clay, limestone and sandy soils, this wine showcases the richness and complexity of the vintage. Aged for 18 months in concrete tanks, large oak casks and French oak barrels, it combines depth, harmony and fruit purity. Rich yet beautifully balanced, it offers immediate pleasure while promising graceful evolution over the next decade and beyond.

Why choose this wine:

This wine stands out for its balance between concentration and finesse. Old vines provide intensity and depth, while the diverse terroirs bring complexity and freshness. The carefully managed ageing refines the tannins and enhances structure without overshadowing the fruit. A classic and authentic expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape that will appeal to Rhône enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Coming from a mix of terroirs and based on 64% Grenache with smaller amounts of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Vaccarèse, and Counoise, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape shows a crazy exotic nose of strawberries, sappy tropical flowers, basil and mint, blood orange, and pepper.

Aged in a combination of foudre, old barrique, stainless steel, and concrete, it's medium-bodied and shows a pure, elegant, silky mouthfeel with fine tannins. It's certainly one of the more singular, exotic wines in the vintage and I suspect will evolve nicely for a good decade. Drink 2025-2035.
