Château des Fines Roches Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2001 is now a true heritage bottle, offering a rare opportunity to experience a Châteauneuf-du-Pape after nearly a quarter of a century of evolution.
The Vieilles Vignes cuvée represents the most ambitious expression of Château des Fines Roches, produced from very old vines of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. For more recent vintages, the Guide Hachette mentions vines around 80 years old and a blend made up of equal parts of these three grape varieties, but I have not found a sufficiently reliable technical sheet to confirm that exact blend for the 2001 vintage.
Today, the 2001 vintage offers all the appeal of a mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Guide Hachette had already singled out Fines Roches 2001 as a “very successful wine”, describing it as powerful and warm, combining fruit, spice, roundness and firm tannins, with a finish marked by notes of bay leaf.
After more than twenty additional years in bottle, that youthful power has, when storage conditions have been ideal, evolved into a much more complex register of stewed fruit, forest floor, mushroom, spices, dried herbs and mentholated notes.
A rare expression of traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a bottle aimed above all at lovers of mature fine wines.

Why choose this wine:

The appeal of this bottle lies as much in its age as in its origin. The old vines and traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape grape varieties naturally produce wines with the depth and structure required to evolve profoundly over time.
A documented tasting of Château des Fines Roches 2001 carried out in 2015 already noted a tertiary bouquet of forest floor, mushroom and damp earth, but above all a palate that retained considerable tension and vibrancy, with black and red fruits followed by a long finish combining blackberry, strawberry, morel mushroom, menthol, dried herbs and pepper.
In 2026, each bottle must of course be considered individually according to its storage history. When perfectly cellared, it is precisely this evolution that makes a 25-year-old Châteauneuf-du-Pape so fascinating.

The wine shows an evolved garnet color, gradually shading toward brick and mahogany at the rim. The nose reveals a complex array of candied cherry, plum, blackberry and dried fruit, quickly joined by forest floor, fallen leaves, mushroom, leather and Provençal herbs. Hints of pepper, bay leaf, menthol and spice add further complexity.
The palate has softened with time, with fully integrated tannins and a more delicate texture than in its youth. A fine acidity can still provide freshness and length, while ripe fruit gradually gives way to spice, forest floor and tertiary notes. The finish is persistent, complex and distinctly mature.
An aged wine to serve with care, at around 16°C, preferably opened gently rather than subjected to prolonged decanting.
